The Dixie Chicks

Why is she/are they here?

Martie Erwin Maguire, Emily Erwin Robison and Natalie Maines are collectively  The Dixie Chicks. Widely loved for their music and talent , known for a controversy manufactured by right wing nut jobs. Their reaction to this polemic was perfect. What had previously been implicit in their thinking was catalysed into an explicit new wave of music and recognition.

UnFunFact: Toby Keith’s 2003 tour began displaying a backdrop showing a doctored photo of Maines with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. He argues that the doctored photo was intended to express his feeling that Maines’s criticism was tyrannical and a dictator-like attempt to squelch Keith’s free speech. Keith sang for Trump’s inauguration and at a male only concert for Trump in Saudi Arabia. In other words, Toby Keith is a right wing POS, a bully, a liar and a crybaby.

FunFact: Dixie Chicks are the biggest selling female band of all time in the U.S.

Quotes:

To me, I was right from the beginning, because it’s my right as an American to speak up and question our president, have my point of view, have my opinion, question what I want to question, and say what I want to say about our government.

Natalie Maines

I love seeing strong-willed women inspire little girls. I hope someday some new artist will say ‘I was inspired by the Dixie Chicks.

Emily Robison

I’d rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don’t want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do.

Martie Maguire

Samples of lyrics:

It’s a sad, sad story
When a mother will teach her daughter
That she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Saying that I better
Shut up and sing
Or my life will be over?

Not Ready To Make Nice, 2006

Throwing stones from the top of your rock
Thinking no one can see
The secrets you hide behind
Your southern hospitality
On the strip, the kids get lit
So they can have a real good time
Come Sunday they can just take their pick
From the crucifix skyline
